Do Your Research And Carefully Weigh The Pros And Cons Of Taking anabolic steroids

March 23, 2009

Steroid

I noticed that a group of guys who go to my gym were suddenly getting much bigger than I am. This didn’t make sense as I work out on the schedule as they do and we’re on the same weight training routine, although I seem to take my work out more seriously. I also made sure to eat well and I’d often see those guys sitting in a burger joint, shoveling in the french fries while I jogged past the window. I was making what I thought was really good progress and most people at the gym had pegged me as the one who was significantly more ripped than that crew. Basically, I was doing everything right and seeing the results. Then out of nowhere, these guys suddenly started to pack on the muscle and soon surpassed me. I wasn’t doing anything different; if anything, the intensity of my routine had increased. They sure weren’t taking their routine any more seriously, so what had given them such a boost?

I had my suspicions, but one day when I was getting changed, they were confirmed. I finally approached one of the guys and asked what his secret was.

“Pretty simple,” he said. “One of my buddies turned us on to anabolic steroids and it’s been nothing but smooth sailing ever since.”

With the ice broken on the subject, I pushed him for more detail about what they were taking and how it worked. The more we talked, the more I realized that this guy wasn’t really certain about what it was he was putting in his body. Sure, it was working, but that seemed to be all he and his friends cared about. I can understand what it’s like to be results-focused, but this was not Gatorade we were talking about, it was a serious drug that has repeatedly been in the news -and not in a good way. Wasn’t he concerned about his health? Was it even legal? Did he have any idea if there was a specific type of steroid he was taking? Where did it come from? These guys didn’t care, so long as it showed up, the dealer would take their cash and they continued to bulk up without having to knock themselves out. From his perspective, it was the perfect shortcut.

They were seeing fantastic results, so I considered whether taking an anabolic steroid would be something I might consider. I went online and researched the subject, coming up with a series of potential side effects:

• water retention
• enlarged prostate
• breast enlargement (including in men)
• liver damage
• sexual dysfunction
• shrinking of testicles
• baldness
• acne
• stomach pain
• loss of natural testosterone production
• mood disturbances including potential for increased aggression or depression

The list contains a lot of frightening afflictions and should serve as red flag to anyone who is considering using steroids casually, without knowing what they are taking, what the correct doses are or where the products came from.

I haven’t made up my mind yet. Certainly, it seems as though steroids can be helpful in promoting the growth of lean muscle mass, but I’m still weighting the risks. What I am sure of is that no-one should be buying steroids unless they are purchasing from a reputable company, they shouldn’t be taking these drugs forever, and their doctor should always be closely monitoring their health.
