What Really Stretch Marks Are?
March 11, 2009
Stretch marks are the thin lines on the body that change color over a period of time. They usually appear after pregnancy or sudden weight gain. They often affect the teenagers, women after pregnancy and body builders.
The general misconception about stretch marks is that they occur when the skin expands. It actually occurs when the skin fails to expand and instead tears. A hormone called glucocorticiod is responsible for suppressing the production of collagen and elastin. These two fibers help the skin in stretching. This hormone does not allow the dermis to make these fibers.

This happens under the conditions of Cushing’s syndrome or due to prolonged use of steroids. Under such conditions you are supposed to consult your doctor for correct advice.
A number of methods have been developed to remove the stretch marks. Among them, laser and chemical peeling are the most effective. Balanced intake of foods rich in Vitamin C also help in reducing stretch marks. If nothing works for you, let time take care of it. The stretch marks usually fade away with time.
The best advice would be to consult your doctor as he’ll be able to analyze the reason correctly and will cure for the same.
