Wild Yam Uses
December 31, 2008

Commercial wild yam cream and oral preparations are used to relieve menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other gynecologic symptoms. Wild yam doesn’t, however, contain hormones or compounds such as dihydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which are converted into hormones in the human body. Orally, wild yam is used as a “natural alternative” for estrogen replacement, postmenopausal vaginal dryness, PMS, osteoporosis, increasing energy and libido in men and women, and breast enlargement. It may also be used for diverticulosis, gallbladder colic, painful menstruation, cramps, rheumatoid arthritis, and urinary tract infection. Wild yam cream with progesterone added from other sources exerts physiologic effects from the absorbed progesterone. Progesterone cream may be useful for treating menopausal symptoms. However, progesterone has been shown to be an ineffective treatment for PMS even at much higher doses.
Wild yam is also used in multiple ingredient commercial formulas promoted for treatment of menopause symptoms and PMS, prevention of osteoporosis and threatened abortion, andenhancement of weight loss, women’s general health, and men’s prostate health. Diosgenin, a yam constituent, is promoted as a natural precursor to DHEA to improve athletic performance and slow the aging process.
